Ghetto-Rig a Netgear Wireless Router To An External Antenna

Not sure how many of you all I will reach with this one, but, I couldn't find anyone who had any kind of guide on how to do what I am going to explain in a moment.

I recently purchased a D-Link external antenna (it was on sale at Circuit City) for my dad's Netgear wireless router. I couldn't recall if the antenna was removable or not so I ask a sales rep (who also happened to be one of their "computer technician specialists" if Netgear routers, in particularly the WGR614 series, had removable antennas. He answered "Yeah!" as if it was common knowledge. Well, maybe the do, but, the truth is, I was holding the D-Link external antenna in my hand when I asked him and he should have clued me in to the fact that the particular antenna I had in-hand was not compatible with that router. The antenna cost $30+ after the sale and I felt as if I had left with a decent piece of equipment. Actually, I did... however, what I did not leave with was a compatible piece of equipment.

So, what better to do than ghetto-rig a way to make this work. Now, before all you smart people that know of better ways to accomplish this, let me remind you of the name of the web site you are visiting.

You will only need a few supplies for this project:

• Netgear wireless router
• D-Link (or, possibly another brand...) external antenna
• Electrical tape

I assume you already have a Netgear wireless router and external antenna, otherwise you probably wouldn't have found this site. Also, if you are going to be a true ghettorigger, you will need to have a good supply of various tapes and twine such as electrical tape, jute twin, and duct tape. These are the quintessential building blocks of all things ghetto-rigged.
